2006 JUROR: James Surls
Surls was born and raised in East Texas, and no artist of
his generation has had a greater impact upon the development
of Texas as a locus of vibrant creativity. The exhibition
focuses on a twenty-year period when Surls owned a large
tract of land in Splendora, from which he took both raw
materials and his intellectual inspiration. The artist moved
to Colorado in 1998. A world- renowned artist and sculptor
James Surls resident of the Roaring Fork Valley, has
numerous artworks displayed in major public collections,
including the Museum of Modern Art (NY); the Whitney Museum
of Modern Art (NY); the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (NY);
and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (CA). Mr. Surls
is the recipient of several awards, among them: the 1993
Living Legend Award from the Dallas (TX) Visual Art Center;
Texas Artist of the Year (1991) from the Houston Area Art
League; and in 1979, he won a National Endowment of the Arts
