Over
the last 28 years, Brave Combo has collected a dizzying
array of descriptive musical pegs, boldly going where few
bands have gone before, and even fewer could (or would) dare
to venture. Succeeding in its first mission, Brave Combo is
America's premier contemporary polka band, and a
Grammy
winning one at that. One can describe them as a
groundbreaking world music act, a hot jazz quintet, a
rollicking rock'n'roll bar band, a Tex-Mex conjunto, a
sizzling blues band, a saucy cocktail combo, a deadly
serious novelty act, a Latin orchestra, and one of America's
dance bands par excellence. Brave Combo remains a band,
despite all the achievements, whose music all but begs wider
airing.

"YOU.
WILL. NOT. STOP. DANCING.The best part about living
in the '2000's is the different genres of music that smash
like atoms, creating a brilliant flash of energy. Such is
the genesis of the Inner City All Stars, who slams together
old-school funk, New Orleans jazz, D.C. GO-GO, rap from back
in the day and blaxploitation wah-wah rock into one big
booty-shakin' jam." - JONANNA WIDNER, DALLAS OBSERVER
The band brought down the house at NBC's "Showtime at the
Apollo", the 2008 "Best Band"Association for the Promotion
of Campus Activities, and have ripped up stages across the
nation at festivals that include The Dallas Museum of Art
Jazz under the Stars Series, Ft. Worth Main Street Festival
and Grapefest in Grapevine, TX. The Inner City All Stars
also fires up the stage at notable venues that include
Tipitina's & Cafe Brazil in New Orleans , The Gypsy Tea Room
& House of Blues in Dallas ,and Alligator Alley in Ft.
Lauderdale , FL.
Eric Dozier fuses African-American gospel and traditional
spirituals with world rhythms into a musical elixir that the
New York Times has called “...rousing”. Eric attended Duke
University majoring in Public Policy Studies with an
emphasis on youth, race, poverty, and education. He later
obtained a Masters in Theological Studies from Duke Divinity
School and completed post-graduate studies at the Landegg
Academy's World Order Studies Program in Weinmacht,
Switzerland.
Compelled by the urgent need to help
establish unity at a neighborhood, national and global
level, Eric Dozier formed One Human Family Music Workshop
combining jazz and gospel to create a unique gospel
experience. Through his role as co-founder and National
Director of Arts and Education for One Human Family
Workshops, Inc., Eric devotes his musical, spiritual, and
intellectual talents to eradicating social, religious,
racial, gender, and cultural discrimination.

"I'm
one of Dale's biggest fans - I enjoy all his records and
think he's great. I think there's a great deal of similarity
between Dale and Waylon and myself..." "Dale stays true to
what he believes in...whatever they say made me and Waylon
'Outlaws,' I think he's the same...if WE were, HE is."
--WILLIE NELSON
"Dale Watson writes songs that wouldn't
sound out of place on one of Johnny Cash's best albums --
songs that will endure...addressing matters of life and
death, truth and justice, loss and longing in a voice that
rings -- make that, rumbles -- with conviction." -

Let’s
just get it out of the way right now: There’s no jug-playing
in the South Austin Jug Band. And the bluegrass connotation
that name carries should be spilled down the drain along
with any other moonshine-preconceived notions. Sure, there’s
fiddle, mandolin, an upright bass … but there’s also
drumming, occasional electric guitar and even digital
looping. And Beck. The band’s latest album, Strange
Invitation, gets its title from a lyric in Mr. Hansen’s 1997
charmer, “Jackass,” the only cover on this 11-song
collection.
Comparisons, if they must be made, might
meander more toward a low-intensity Grateful Dead (which, it
should be noted, started out as a real jug band) or
something with an even more melodic and laid-back vibe. Lead
singer/acoustic guitarist James Hyland, whose tenor
redefines mellow, would be quite happy if you’d just go with
“bitchin’ tunes.”
The Capitol City Highlanders,
Austin's oldest operating pipe
and drum band, was founded in 1980 by Nick Classen. The
original band had 7 members (5 pipers / 2 drummers).
The band through the years has performed at hundreds of
functions, and has played for dignitaries such as the
Governor of Texas and publisher Malcom Forbes as well as
Prince Charles on his visit to Texas in 1986.
The current Capitol City Highlanders, still led by Pipe
Major Nick Classen, is very active in the Austin and Central
Texas community, performing an average of twice per month
during the year.
Wacoan
and "Pied Piper" himself Richard Thomas has been
playing
jazz and more for 35 years. From an early age, Richards
influences are Rashaan Roland Kirk, Stanley Turntine, Grover
Washington, Jr., Ronnie Laws, and Gene Ammons. Richard
Thomas has performed with artists such as Roy Ayers, Melba
Moore, and Ronnie Laws and for Jesse Jackson and Chet
Edwards. He has been a teacher and mentor
to young aspiring
artists in the community for many years. The quartet
features piano, bass, saxophone and drums and percussion and
was selected as the KXAX Band of the Year through
competition with 27 other bands nationally. We're glad to
welcome Richard and his talented group of musicians back to
the WCAF stage for another crowd pleaser!
